Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) formerly NATIONAL ELECTRIC POWER AUTHORITY (NEPA) Privatisation |
Unbundling of NEPA into 18 business units (11 distribution companies (Discos), 1 transmission company (Transco) and 6 generation companies (Genscos). |
delayed |
Feb 05: Privatisation of NEPA companies will kick off Q1 2005. The bill will empower the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) and the Bureau of Private Enterprises (BPE) to auction NEPA´s six generation companies (Gentos), 11 distribution companies (Discos) and the linking transmission company (Fransysco) to the public. The privatisation of NEPA is to begin with the six power generation companies before the end of March, 2005. There are however serious concerns over the marketability of the NEPA gencos given their abysmal performance ratio against installed capacity. Some of the hydro propelled generation plants have been totally out of operation due to low water levels while some thermal stations suffer constant gas outage due to pipeline vandalisation in the Niger Delta and elsewhere. Approved by the NCP. Enabling Decree LFN Cap 256. Maximum Strategic Investor Participation as a % after privatisation: 40%. Maximum Federal Government Parastatal as a % after privatisation: 40%. Nigeria Individuals Participation as % after privatisation: 20%. Under the new law, rich individuals and organizations will have to pay higher electricity bills, as government´s subsidy on tariffs will now be targeted only on those incapable of paying their bills. Presently NEPA is said to be losing N 4.6 per kW of power sold as consumers are charged N 3.59 as against N 8.19, which is the cost. |
